Silicon steel, also called electrical steel, is a soft-magnetic silicon-iron alloy with a very low carbon content and a silicon content usually between 0.5% and 4.5% by weight. Silicon raises the resistivity and maximum permeability of iron, which reduces coercivity, core loss and magnetic ageing.
