316Ti (UNS S31635) is a titanium-stabilized version of 316 molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel. 316 alloys offer superior resistance to general corrosion and pitting/crevice corrosion compared to conventional chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels like 304.
316Ti resists sensitization through titanium addition, which stabilizes the microstructure against chromium carbide precipitation—the root cause of sensitization. This stabilization is achieved through intermediate-temperature heat treatment, during which titanium reacts with carbon to form titanium carbides.
The austenitic structure also imparts excellent toughness to these grades, even at cryogenic temperatures.
