8620 alloy steel is a low-carbon carburizing/case-hardening steel containing nickel, chromium, and molybdenum as alloying elements. The nickel content provides 8620 with good ductility and toughness, while chromium and molybdenum in its composition increase hardness penetration and wear resistance.
SAE 8620 alloy steel possesses flexibility during hardening treatments, thereby improving case/core properties. Pre-hardened and tempered (uncarburized) 8620 can be further surface-hardened by nitriding, but due to low carbon content, it responds poorly to flame or induction hardening.
